Personal Finance

A big part of what I want to accomplish this year is get better at personal finance.
I used to have a good enough hang on my credit - cue a roller coaster of being employed and then not, plus medical bills, plus moving multiple times and you end up with a mess.
I'm sure I could've avoided it by having an emergency savings account set up but I simply didn't think that far ahead. It's hard when your primary focus is paying your credit cards down. I got pretty close a couple of years back but again, one thing then another, being underemployed...yeah.
So now that I just recently got this really nice job, I plan on pulling my britches up and being an adult about money.
First order on the agenda is getting a debt payment plan down, so I'll be throwing about $500 a month towards that. (Please keep me to this, anyone who reads this!).
So after I get caught up on my missed payments ( :( ) this month with my tax return, I am on track to do that. It should take me roughly 14 months at $500 a month.
Which means no moving out when our current lease is up. :/
But that'll give us more time to save up and start out on the right foot, so I just have to keep telling myself that.
Between now and March, I hope to implement these items as well:
5% per paycheck into an off-site (not a bank we regularly deal with) account that is not touched
Automated payments and having that amount budgeted each week.
Life insurance policies
A full budget planned out that we actually execute
That's a big enough list for starting out, I think. We just really have to buckle down, which is hard, because we really like buying stuff. Not even like decor or TVs, just eating out, little items here and there - a little adds up to a lot.
I also need to get ahead on our chore charts - it's the only way we can keep track of everything that needs to be done. -_-;
My husband is a slob but at least he's helping out now! And I was very lazy about stuff too, so I feel like this year is going to be really hard, but really productive/positive.
